Kathleen McHugh, PhD
Licensed Psychologist
Many people aren’t sure what to expect when they first schedule an individual therapy session. If you are a parent scheduling for your child, you will spend much of the first session alone with Dr. McHugh so she can gather background information and discuss your concerns. She will also spend time with your child, building rapport and getting to know your child. If you are an adult, the first session will focus on your own background and current concerns. After the initial session, you and Dr. McHugh will make a plan for moving forward. Dr. McHugh tends to be solution-focused and uses cognitive-behavioral techniques to help you manage challenges in your life and make changes. She also incorporates mindfulness, meditation, and other methods when appropriate or requested by you. Therapy is collaborative, and although Dr. McHugh has expertise, you are the expert on yourself and you will both work together to develop your plan for progress.
